Delivering preconstruction and full building services for a major airport terminal expansion.
Overview
Cyril E. King Airport is the primary aviation gateway to St. Thomas and a critical transport asset for the U.S. Virgin Islands. The next phase of the terminal expansion forms part of a wider strategy to modernise airport infrastructure, improve passenger experience and support long-term growth in tourism and regional connectivity.
The USD 350 million-redevelopment is being delivered through the Virgin Islands Port Authority’s Airports Public-Private Partnership initiative. Led by SkyCity, a consortium comprising Aecon Group Inc., Consigli Construction Co., Inc. and J. Benton Construction, LLC, with Avports as airport operator, the programme will transform the existing terminal into a modern aviation hub capable of handling up to 900,000 passengers annually, tripling its original capacity.
The project builds on Update Group’s established track record in the Caribbean aviation sector and continues a strong working relationship with Aecon across multiple airport developments in the region.
Our Scope
Update Group was appointed to provide preconstruction services and deliver the full building services package for the next phase of the terminal expansion. Our scope includes MEP systems, fire protection and life safety, ICT and security infrastructure, and the complete Airport Information Systems package.
Operational systems form a significant component of the scope, including baggage handling, check-in and immigration systems, alongside standby power, HVAC and wastewater upgrades designed to support resilience, redundancy and operational continuity. These systems will be delivered to meet the performance, safety and reliability requirements of a modern international airport.
Early contractor engagement has been central to the project approach. Through collaborative design reviews, life-cycle investment advice, buildability and scheduling assessments, and long-lead procurement planning, Update Group is supporting the project team in de-risking delivery and improving programme certainty ahead of construction commencement.
This early involvement is already delivering tangible benefits to the concession structure, enabling informed decision-making at a critical stage of the project lifecycle and establishing a robust foundation for construction and commissioning.
A major airport terminal expansion shaped through early contractor engagement and delivered to international aviation standards.
