Update Group delivered the full building services and airport operational systems for Bermuda’s new passenger terminal, establishing a benchmark for Caribbean aviation infrastructure.
Overview
LF Wade International Airport is Bermuda’s primary aviation gateway and a critical component of the island’s transport, tourism and economic infrastructure. The redevelopment of the airport was delivered through a public private partnership between the Bermudian Government, Skyport and Aecon Group, responding to increasing passenger demand and the need for a modern, resilient terminal facility.
The project involved the construction of a new passenger terminal of approximately 280,000 sq ft, designed to meet international aviation standards for safety, passenger comfort and operational efficiency. The terminal was engineered to accommodate significant long-term growth, with systems designed to support up to four million passengers per year.
Completed in 2020, the project has since been recognised as a leading example of airport modernisation in the region. In 2022, LF Wade International Airport was voted Best Airport of its Size in the Latin America and Caribbean region at the Airport Council International World Airport Service Quality Awards, reflecting the success of the redevelopment from both operational and passenger perspectives.
Our Scope
Update Group was engaged by Aecon Airport Constructors to deliver the entire Mechanical, Electrical, IT and Fire Safety systems for the new passenger terminal. Our scope encompassed both core building services and specialist airport operational systems, delivered to international aviation and safety standards.
In addition to the terminal MEP and life safety systems, Update Group delivered major infrastructure packages, including the MV electrical network, standby generation and full-load UPS support, and site-wide storm drainage systems. These systems were designed to provide resilience, redundancy and continuity of operations in a challenging island environment.
A significant component of the works was the delivery of the Airport Information Management System. Update Group provided a turnkey solution covering flight and gate display systems, automated check-in kiosks and all airline check-in desks, fully integrated with airport operational and baggage handling systems.
Update Group worked closely with Aecon throughout design development, installation, testing and commissioning to deliver a fully ORAT-compliant terminal. At the peak, more than 250 workers were active on site, with the project achieving over 500,000 manhours without a lost time injury, reflecting a strong safety culture and disciplined delivery approach across the project team.
A state-of-the-art airport terminal delivered through disciplined systems integration, ORAT-compliant commissioning and exceptional safety performance.
